Knots with Infinitely Many Incompressible Seifert Surfaces

We show that a knot in S with an infinite number of incompressible Seifert surfaces contains a closed incompressible surface in its complement.

Rulings of Legendrian knots as spanning surfaces

Each ruling of a Legendrian link can be naturally treated as a surface. For knots, the ruling is 2–graded if and only if the surface is orientable. For 2–graded rulings of homogeneous (in particular, alternating) knots, we prove that the genus of this surface is at most the genus of the knot. While this is not true in general, we do prove that the canonical genus (a.k.a. diagram genus) of any k...

Smooth tropical surfaces with infinitely many tropical lines

We study the tropical lines contained in smooth tropical surfaces in R3. On smooth tropical quadric surfaces we find two one-dimensional families of tropical lines, like in classical algebraic geometry. Unlike the classical case, however, there exist smooth tropical surfaces of any degree with infinitely many tropical lines.

Bf Theories and 2-knots

We discuss the relations between (topological) quantum field theories in 4 dimensions and the theory of 2-knots (embedded 2-spheres in a 4-manifold). The so-called BF theories allow the construction of quantum operators whose trace can be considered as the higher-dimensional generalization of Wilson lines for knots in 3-dimensions. First-order perturbative calculations lead to higher dimensiona...

DONALD J. D'ELIA, Benjamin Rush: philosopher of the American Revolution, from Trans. Amer. philosoph. Soc., 1974, New Series, vol. 64, part 5, 4to, pp. 113, $5.00. Rush is remembered for his medical activities and his contribution as a revolutionary patriot to the genesis of America. About the second of these we know less, and Professor D'Elia, an historian, now provides a scholarly analysis of...
